Rosemary

Rosemary is an aromatic evergreen shrub which belongs to the genus of Rosmarinus (Rosmarinus officinalis) and the family of Labiates.

It has thick leaves and it isn’t usually taller than 2 meters. Its flowers have purple, white or blue white colour. It grows in rocky mountain areas and doesn’t require much watering.

Its origins can be found in the Mediterranean area, but nowadays except for this area it is grown as an ornamental plant for its beautiful cyan flowers almost everywhere in Europe and areas with mild temperatures in the USA.

History

In ancient Greece, rosemary was considered to be the present of goddess Venus to the people.

It was used in various religious ceremonies and celebrations, in decoration of buildings, temples and statues that depicted gods, or it was burned for incense.

The students used to place small rosemary leaves on their heads for better concentration.

It has pharmaceutical and culinary use.

 

Medicinal uses

It boosts the immune system, as it is rich in vitamin C.

It has antiseptic properties and it is used in wounds, in eczemas and in rheumatisms.

It is a tranquilizer, it reduces tension and stress, it relaxes the muscles and fights depression.

It also improves memory and concentration.

It makes hair stronger and it makes them grow longer.
